# Canvas Studio vs a custom Craft CMS page builder

The fields developers wire together become the controls clients have to understand. Compare the work of building a page builder with using a visual composition system.

## Build pages without building another page builder

A flexible Craft website often comes with a builder the agency has assembled: content fields, nested blocks, layout options and Twig templates. The foundation might be native Matrix fields, or a plugin such as Neo or Vizy. The agency still shapes the project’s fields, rendering and editing workflow. We have built these systems for clients ourselves.

That flexibility has two sides. Developers build and maintain the connections between the controls and the rendered page. Clients learn what those controls mean and how their choices work together. Adding another dropdown can solve a layout request while adding another decision to the editing experience.

Canvas Studio brings page composition into a dedicated visual editor, with shared theme definitions and reusable designs. Its purpose is to reduce the repeated work of creating that composition system and help authors make layout decisions in context.

**Developer setup**

Custom builder

Define the blocks and settings, connect them to templates, and implement their responsive behavior.

Canvas Studio

Configure a theme, compose with the available modules, and integrate the Canvas field into your Craft templates.

**Client editing**

Custom builder

The project determines how settings, nested content and previews help an author understand the page.

Canvas Studio

Work with the composition visually and adjust its layout, content and responsive settings within the editor.

**Ongoing ownership**

Custom builder

Your team maintains the authoring controls, template mappings and supported combinations.

Canvas Studio

The plugin provides the composition system. Your team still owns the site’s design, integration and project-specific behavior.

## One section, many connected decisions

Consider an image beside a heading, paragraph and button. Our example uses native Matrix fields and custom Twig templates, without Neo or Vizy. In its two-column section, editors could set the container width, column ratio, gap, order and background. Inside each column were further choices for content type, typography, padding, alignment, images and links.

Each setting had a purpose. Together, they asked the author to understand a layout through a hierarchy of forms. “Move the image to the other side” becomes a task of finding the relevant block, identifying the ordering control and checking the result.

### Configuring the section through fields

Open the section, find its layout settings and edit the nested column content. The developer’s labels, defaults, field organization and preview determine how clearly the author can connect each choice to the page.

### Working with the visual composition

Arrange Image, Text and Button modules in a row. Adjust the column proportions and named gap, then use breakpoint overrides for the smaller-screen layout. Canvas brings those controls together around the composition.

### The work behind each dropdown

A column-ratio field needs a matching layout implementation. Spacing choices need definitions. Reversing columns needs sensible behavior on smaller screens. Image and text variants need to work with the same alignment and padding options.

Shared Twig components and project starters can reduce that work substantially. They still leave the team responsible for maintaining the builder’s settings, rendering rules and authoring experience as requirements change. Canvas packages the common composition controls so each project can start with that system in place.

### Make flexibility understandable

More controls alone do not make an editor easier to use. The useful questions are whether clients can find the relevant setting, understand what it affects and see how it relates to the rest of the page.

Canvas uses themes to define the available design language: palettes, typography, spacing and breakpoints. Linked Components keep a shared structure and design while allowing local content. Static copies provide an independent starting point. These give teams ways to organize flexibility; clients will still need an introduction to the workflow.

## What should your team own?

**Choose a custom builder for a deliberately tailored workflow.**

A narrow set of carefully chosen fields may be the clearest interface for a specific task. Unusual content relationships, business rules or rendering requirements can justify owning the implementation.

**Consider Canvas when visual composition keeps becoming development work.**

If projects repeatedly need columns, spacing controls, responsive variations and reusable sections, evaluate how much of that work Canvas’s existing modules and theme system cover.

**Evaluate the client handover as well as the build.**

Ask an editor to change a layout, adapt it for mobile and reuse a section. Observe which choices they understand and where they need help. Compare your actual custom builder, including any previews and shortcuts it provides.

## Common questions

### Are Matrix, Neo and Vizy alternatives to a custom builder?

They can be foundations for one. “Custom builder” describes the complete editing system built for a project, whether it uses native Matrix fields and Twig alone or also uses Neo, Vizy or other tools. Our [Matrix](https://canvasforcraft.com/compare/matrix/), [Neo](https://canvasforcraft.com/compare/neo/) and [Vizy](https://canvasforcraft.com/compare/vizy/) comparisons examine those individual choices. This page examines the implementation and client experience around them.

### Can a custom builder already be visual and reusable?

Yes. Agencies can provide previews, visual pickers, shared content and template libraries. Their presence depends on the implementation. Canvas’s proposition is to supply a reusable composition editor as a product.

### Does Canvas eliminate development or client training?

No. Craft setup, content modelling, theme configuration, integration and project-specific testing remain. The benefit to evaluate is how much composition work the existing system covers and how well the editing workflow fits your clients. We do not claim a measured time saving or an automatic migration from an existing builder.
