# Canvas Studio vs Neo for Craft CMS page building

Nested blocks give a builder structure. Canvas brings the layout, responsive choices and shared design into the composition workflow.

## From a nested block builder to a visual canvas

If you use Neo to build flexible Craft pages, you are already thinking in components. Canvas Studio addresses the same page-composition need through a visual field with shared theme definitions and reusable designs.

[Neo](https://github.com/spicywebau/craft-neo) builds on the Matrix concept with nested block types, existing Craft fields and rules for allowed children. It also supports grouping and copying blocks with their descendants. Those tools give developers a foundation for a tailored builder.

**Composition**

Neo

Arrange the block types and nesting rules configured for the project.

Canvas Studio

Arrange sections, rows, columns and modules on a visual canvas.

**Layout settings**

Neo

The project’s fields and rendering implementation define the available choices.

Canvas Studio

Layout controls work with theme-defined spacing, typography and responsive breakpoints.

**Reuse**

Neo

Reuse field definitions, copy blocks and build shared rendering through your templates.

Canvas Studio

Save linked Components with local content, or insert independent Static copies.

## Give a service page room to change

A page starts with a two-column introduction: an image on one side, text and a button on the other. A second page needs a different column balance. On a smaller screen, both should stack with closer spacing.

### With a Neo-based builder

Your developer can model rows, columns and content blocks, then expose the layout settings the site needs. Editors work with that configuration. Another layout choice may already fit the model, or it may call for additional fields and template behavior.

### With Canvas Studio

Compose the introduction from modules, set its proportions and choose spacing from the theme. Use breakpoint overrides for the smaller-screen arrangement. These are parts of the composition system rather than a new control set for each project.

### Neo can power flexible layouts

Foster Commerce’s [Measure Meant case study](https://www.fostercommerce.com/commerce-minded-post/flexible-craft-cms-page-builders-for-measure-meant) shows a Neo-based implementation with configurable columns, widths, padding and color choices. It is a useful example of how much an agency can provide through a carefully designed builder.

Canvas’s proposition is to package that class of visual composition work into a dedicated editor, with a consistent theme and reuse model. The comparison is about what your team needs to implement and maintain. Neo can already support flexible arrangements.

### Keep a shared section connected

A linked Canvas Component can keep the same design across several pages while each placement carries local text and images. Its internal structure stays with the master. When a page needs its own version of the design, a Static copy gives it an independent starting point.

## Which approach fits your next project?

**Keep Neo for a deliberately modelled block hierarchy.**

It can be a good fit when your project needs specific block relationships and an authoring interface built around existing fields.

**Consider Canvas for visual page composition.**

It is aimed at teams that want to configure a shared design language and compose varied pages without repeatedly implementing the surrounding layout editor.

**Judge the editing task, not just the finished page.**

Compare how an editor changes proportions, adapts the layout for a phone and updates a reused design. The output alone does not show the difference in workflow.

## Common questions

### Is Canvas a drop-in replacement for Neo?

It is an alternative for page-building workflows, not a compatible Neo storage format. Existing block data and rendering need assessment before a switch; no automatic conversion is promised.

### Can developers keep custom Twig templates?

Yes. Render a Canvas field inside your existing template, or render a saved Component by its UID. A shared header composition can also appear on a page whose body is written in Twig.

### Does Canvas include a ready-made template library?

A growing library, including header and footer sections, is planned. Saving and reusing your own compositions is distinct from that planned collection.
