Canvas Studio / Matrix

Canvas Studio vs Matrix for Craft CMS page building

A custom content model or a visual canvas. Choose where your team needs structure and where a page needs room to change.

A Matrix alternative for visual page composition

A Matrix page builder starts with the content model your developer creates. Canvas Studio starts with visual building blocks and a shared theme. Both can belong in a Craft website; the decision is how you want to build and change its pages.

Craft 5 Matrix (opens in a new tab) uses nested entries, reusable entry types and fields. It supports nesting and reordering. The site’s templates determine how that content appears. Canvas adds a composition field with sections, rows, columns and modules, so layout becomes part of the editing workflow.

Starting point

Matrix

Define entry types and fields for your content model.

Canvas Studio

Compose with visual modules inside a Canvas field.

Design choices

Matrix

Your implementation decides which choices appear as fields and how they render.

Canvas Studio

A theme defines palettes, typography, spacing and breakpoints used by the composition.

Front-end output

Matrix

Query nested entries and render your project’s templates.

Canvas Studio

Render the field through Canvas’s Twig helper and keep your surrounding Craft template.

One section. A different layout tomorrow.

Imagine a service page with an image beside a heading, paragraph and button. Next week, the editor wants a narrower image, more space between the columns and a stacked arrangement on smaller screens.

With a project-built Matrix section

If those choices are already exposed in the fields and templates, the editor can use them. If they are not, the developer extends that section’s settings and rendering. A well-designed Matrix implementation can be very flexible; that flexibility is part of the project you build.

With Canvas Studio

Use Image, Text and Button modules in a row. Adjust the column proportions, select a named gap and set the responsive layout. The theme supplies the available design definitions, while the page holds its composition.

The practical difference is the work needed to offer that editing experience on the next project. Canvas provides a common composition system you can configure with a site’s design language.

Native Matrix fields and Twig alone can power a complete custom builder. Our custom-builder comparison looks more closely at the implementation work and the client’s experience of its controls.

Share a design and keep each page’s content

Save the section as a linked Component. Its placements can use different text and images while keeping the master’s structure and design. Edit that master to change the shared composition. For a section that should develop independently, use a Static copy instead.

Shared Twig partials and related content are also valid ways to build reuse in Craft. Canvas makes linked design and local content an explicit part of its composition workflow. Try the illustrative reuse example.

Choose around the content you manage

Use Matrix when the content model leads.
Consider a directory, repeatable records or a tightly prescribed set of sections. Native nested entries and project-owned templates may be exactly the structure you need.
Consider Canvas when the page layout needs to vary.
Campaigns, service pages and portfolio compositions can benefit from visual layout choices without designing another field-and-template combination for each variation.
Keep both where they serve different jobs.
A Craft entry can have structured fields for business data and a Canvas field for its visual page content. Changing the composition approach does not require abandoning Craft’s content model.

Common questions

Does Canvas replace every use of Matrix?

No. It is an alternative to using Matrix to assemble page layouts. Matrix remains useful for structured, queryable nested content. Choose according to the job the field needs to do.

Can I automatically convert an existing Matrix builder?

An automatic Matrix-to-Canvas migration is not offered here. Existing fields, relationships and templates need a project-specific assessment before moving content.

Do I still need a developer?

Yes, for the Craft installation, content model and template integration. Canvas focuses on reducing the repeated work of building the visual page-composition tools.
